Lewis and fellow novelist J. Tolkien were close friends. They both served on the English faculty at Oxford University and were active in the informal Oxford literary group known as the Inklings. Lewis returned to Anglicanism at the age of 32, owing to the influence of Tolkien and other friends, and he became an "ordinary layman of the Church of England". Lewis wrote more than 30 books  which have been translated into more than 30 languages and have sold millions of copies.

But poetry was always important to him. I love his poems. They demonstrate the same spiritual insight and facility with words that characterize his prose and make him my favorite writer. Lord, hear my voice, my present voice I mean, Not that which may be speaking an hour hence For I am Legion in an opposite sense And not by show of hands decide between The multiple factions which my state has seen Or will see. Lewis has received loads of attention in the last sixty years because of his potent mix of brilliance, thought organization, orthodox Christianity and clear, understandable writing. But it is important to understand that C. Lewis was not a lone voice crying in the wilderness of the twentieth century.
